Chinese New Year is the season where everyone pampers themselves with good food, visit one relative’s house after another, staying up late with friends or family members to chit chat or for a late-night mah-jong session. However, these activities are unnoticeably affecting your body health as these activities are most probably not restful and healthful and have taken a toll on your immune system.
People will find themselves lethargic and the body will start to show a sign of discomfort after the Chinese New Year binge. In TCM, we known it as “heaty” , “heatiness” or having excessive internal heat in the body. Consumption of herbal tea is one of the ways to get rid of the “heatiness” from the feast.
Herbal tea drinks to relieve internal body heat
Xia Sang Ju 夏桑菊冲剂
Xia Ku Cao or Prunella Vulgaris is a famous heat-clearing herb. This Traditional Chinese medicine is commonly used for the treatment of internal heat itself and a range of illness caused by internal heat. Xia Ku Cao is taken in the form of decoction traditionally and it is rare to be used alone since it is less reliable in this case. One of the famous herbal drinks is Xia Sang Ju drink, made up of Prunella Vulgaris (Xia Ku Cao), Mori Folium or Mulberry Leaves (Sang Ye), and Chrysanthemum (Ju Hua), commonly used for fever, headache, and sore throat.
Mori Folium (Sang Ye) dispel wind and heat, treating fever, throat itching and cough in the early stage of warm diseases or wind heat.
Chrysanthemum (Ju Hua) is a highly effective anti-inflammatory agent, making it a great treatment for soothing discomfort in the throat and lungs. Chrysanthemum usually works well with other herbs, which is used to treat more severe flu-like symptoms, headaches, red eyes, dry eyes. Luo Han Guo 罗汉果
Luo Han Guo, also known as monk fruit, is beneficial to lungs and is very good in clearing the heat in the body for people having the heat-type illness. Luo Han Guo is effective in a way that it can soothe the throat and reduce phlegm. It contains medicinal properties that can dispel body heat, treat cough, and sore throat and gastrointestinal issues.
People who are suffering from heat related cough and experiencing yellow phlegm, sore throat and dry mouth can use Luo Han Guo to treat this heat-type related cough. During Chinese New Year, Luo Han Guo infusion act as a cool refreshing drink and can be used as a substitute of Canned soft drinks to relatives or friends visiting our house.

How to brew monk fruit or Luo Han Guo tea?
- Rinse and wash the dried monk fruit to remove the impurities from their surfaces.
- Break the shell and the content of the monk fruit into small chunks.
- Prepare adequate amount of water (approximately 300ml) in a pot and add monk fruit pieces in it.
- Bring to boil and lower the heat. Let it simmer for 20 min.
Quick and fast way to prepare Luo Han Guo tea
